Podiatry, Chiropody, Foot Health
I work as a Foot Health Practitioner in a clinic based near Hamstead Village in the Great Barr area. I offer some of the services a Podiatrist and Chiropodist offer. I focus on the lower limbs and feet to treat minor ailments in these areas of the body. I can carry out the following treatments without the use of local anaesthesia; such as corns, callus, ingrown nails, fungal nails, and cracked heels. Podiatrist and Chiropodists in addition to the treatments outlined earlier, get involved in serious pathological conditions that may be affecting certain patients. Some Podiatrists specialise in diabetic ulceration management, vascular research, ingrown nail and other foot related surgery.
The Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) is the regulatory body that podiatrist and chiropodist must register with, in order to maintain their professional standards in practice. The role of the regulatory body is to set training standards, guidance on professional skills and behaviour of its members. As a Foot Health Practitioner I am a member of the Alliance of Private Sector Practitioners and the accredited register of Foot Health Practitioners. This register has been independently vetted and approved by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA).
As a Foot Health Practitioner I take a complete health history, to have a clear picture of the patient’s historic/ existing conditions. Paddings and dressings are used to relieve pressure and dress minor wounds. Part of my role is infection control with the equipment I use which I manage through adherence to a strict sterilisation regime. The equipment I use is of a high standard, including an electric vacuum burring machine. I regularly attend training courses to keep my skills set up to date.
Certain health conditions such as strokes, diabetes, eye problems, obesity, cerebral palsy, and dementia imposes challenges for an individual to reach their feet. Therefore I provide routine maintenance treatment to maintain good foot health. As a health practitioner I am bound by code of ethics of my professional body to screen and refer to other medical practitioners any conditions that require further medical investigations.
